Hello, group!
Today we examined the life and philosophy of Boethius via Group 2's presentation. We received a lot of information about his life, particularly the portion that involved him being in jail, awaiting execution, and we also received a lot of information about his philosophy, primarily through his collection of books where he speaks with Lady Philosophy about different aspects of life.
What did you think about the presentation? Did you learn anything new? What aspects of Boethius' life/philosophy peaked your interest the most? Do you believe that Boethius was more Stoic than religious, or vice versa?
Thanks to Group 2 for their insightful presentation!

ReplyDeleteThanks for putting up a post! I thought group 2 did a great job and I learned a lot about Boethius that I did not previously know!

Having read a lot about Boethius, I think he was just an intellectual human being who took upon himself the translation of many brilliant works including Plato's. He was a philosophical man with a stoic view. In the prison he knew he was going to die, and even though his view was stoic he hoped for something bigger, something that would make his life continue when he leaves the physical world.
ReplyDeleteFQ: What was Boethius? (An educator, theologian, statesman, and a philosopher).
DQ: Do you agree with what Philosophy has told Boethius to comfort him in his cell while he was awaiting the execution?

(16-1) I think that Boethius shares a problem common to many religious people: why does God let bad things happen to good people? In this way, I think people of all faiths can relate at least a little to Boethius.
ReplyDeleteFQ: What is Boethius' most famous work? (The Consolation of Philosophy)
DQ: What do you think Boethius would say about the current government "shutdown"?

FQ: Who served the Roman ruler Theoderic the Great? (Boethius)
DQ: Why did Boethius have a conversation with Philosophy instead of God?
Here is a link on Frank Baum: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nwBeiLthB0
I like your discussion question about why did Boethius have a conversation with philosophy instead of god. I never thought of it like that. I think it is good that he wrote of having a convo with philosophy because it is all about thinking and questioning things as philosophy does. It's like truly analyzing something instead of saying oh god said this and that and be done with it because he is omniscient . It is good for us to think for ourselves, you never know what you can truly trust. There are many sides to every argument and different perceptions.
DeleteFQ: Boethius' philosophy closely follows that of the____. (Stoics)
ReplyDeleteDQ: Would you feel consolation in a similar situation as Boethius if you felt you knew that a loving God was looking after you and cared about you even though you were in prison, sentenced to die?

A quick way to memorize facts about philosophers, not just Boethius.
ReplyDeleteThat is one of the most confusing things when I think about god. I mean about the whole part of why there is evil in the world.
FQ: True or False ? Stoicism can be characterized as being very openly emotional.
DQ: What do you think the reason is for there being terrible things that happen in the world? Is god omniscient and has a reason for it to happen?

The most interesting part of the presentations for me, was Book II when Boethius is being explained how the wheel of fortune turns!
ReplyDeleteI thought group two had a great and informative presentation.
ReplyDeleteFQ: Which book is philosophy personified as a woman? De consolatione philosophiae
DQ: Who do you think Lady Philosophy was?

(16-2) I think Boethius is very relatable in the fact that he was a Catholic christian who still was wanting to question different aspects of God.
ReplyDeleteFQ: How many sons did Boethius have? (2)
DQ: Do you think it possible that Boethius went insane when he was imprisoned and sincerely believed that Philosophy had visited him?
