Philosopher's Guild

We need to remember to choose authors, guys. haha.

Factual: Which philosopher said "Man was born free, and everywhere he is in chains."? Rousseau
Discussion: Rousseau says that only when humans are put into an urban setting with materialism and money do they become envious and greedy of their fellow man. Would you agree?
Last time: Good conversation guys.

  1. What kind of discussion did your group have last thursday? Since we never do floaters I don't ever get to hear another group's discussion.

    1. I think that Nature shows us how complex it is, and how everything works so perfectly together. Now, as Hume did say, "just because it looks designed, doesn't follow that it really was designed," doesn't mean that it WASN'T designed. The same goes for the idea of God being the designer. I think it all goes back to Kant's hypothesis that nothing can be known with certainty. He said it was perfectly reasonable for people to have their beliefs, but that it was impossible to know with certainty if those beliefs were true. Since this is the case, I have to rely on my rose-tinted lenses (since that's all I have) and say that the world was created by Intelligent Design, the designer is God, and that Nature shows us this Truth through beauty and complexity.

  4. Factual question: who were the big three British empiricists? (Locke, Berkeley, and Hume)
Discussion question: Do we really understand what we see and think we understand, or is it really unintelligible?
Comment: last time we talked some about the upcoming test, then moved into a great conversation about Berkeley. We ended with a discussion about our views on religion.

Discussion Question: Do you think it is reasonable to assume mechanical laws from past observations and experiences?

Comment: I had fun talking about our various religions last time, we should go more in depth some time.
