Karl Marx (Group 5, Section 001.)

Karl Marx, probably the most recent of philosophers to influence the study of political-science, developed one of the most powerful ideologies in the world today: the "haves" and the "have-nots." In Marx's argument against a free-market society, the unfair relationship between the producers and consumers is unfair; the consumers are being exploited for the betterment of the "few" who own industry and who own stocks in the economy. Because of this causal relationship, a "classless" society will eventually collapse and fail. The internal contradictions embedded in the free-market, he argued, will cause nations to become economically stagnant. In the Marxist view, the benefits 0f the society should be shared with everyone, and not just those who, as Adam Smith suggested long before Marx, "have the cheapest products to sell."

-Life...Enjoy it-

Group 3 (01)

We went outside to discuss Arthur Schopenhauer's, or as he is known on the street Schallalladingong, philosophy and pessimistic views. we had a poignant discussion that produced two questions. Also, a bee flew into my backpack and lived there for a while. It frightened me to no end.

The factual question is as follows:

True or False: Schopenhauer is most know for his optimism.

The answer is false

The discussion question is as follows:

Do you agree with Schopenhauer's pessimistic view of our existence? Explain.

So I'm really sorry that I've failed to post early twice in a row guys...

In class we talked about Kant and his three critiques. We also went through the questions that could possibly be on the test Wednesday the 28th.

Questions:

Which of these is not one of the Three Critiques of Kant?
A. Critique of Practical Reason
B. Critique of Absurdity
C.Critique of Judgement
D. Critique of Pure Reason

Answer: B

Does the Sublime change the way we think about things?

Hegel created a world view of philosophy. He believed that people are defined by each other and the roles they play in the world. He believes that "concepts are conceptual; their meaning depends on their contrasts and complements." That view is a rejection of Kant's philosophy, whom Hegel admired.

He believed that humanity works together to achieve a Weltgeist, or a world spirit. He believes we are all in this world together and we are striving for an all-embracing consciousness that will unify the world.

His goal was to find the absolute truth. He wanted people to be aware that they were part of something larger than themselves and realize that individual contribution to knowledge and truth are never quite definitive, but biased to one side or another.

Factual question: What is a Weltgeist?
World spirit

Discussion question: Hegel believed that the individual is second to the state. Do you believe this to be true?

Group 1-Section 1 "Philosophize Me Cap'n!"

Today's discussion was very interesting. We had the luck of having Dr. Oliver for our entire group discussion so any questions we had, we had the answer! Our whole group seemed to find Kant's theories very interesting, most notably, Kant's idea of categories. His ideology is very complex, but I believe we were able to hammer out the most confusing aspects with Dr. Oliver's help.
Personally, I found this discussion the most interesting because I felt very inspired by Kant's theory. I feel like I grasp his concept and see how it plays out in everyday life.

As you may have deduced, our topic was about Kant. Here are our factual questions:

What is the definition of a priori?
A. Universal and necessary, prior to experience
B. After experience

and

What book by Kant is considered the greatest single book in philosophy?
A. Critique of Reason
B. Critique of Pure Reason
C. Critique of Judgment
D. Critique of Practical Reason

answers: 1 (A)  2 (B)

And our main discussion question (although we had many we addressed!):

Kant says the categories stay the same and we, as humans,  all have the same categories. How is this so if our world and perceptions are changing constantly? Do you believe Kant prepared for the world to change? Why or why not? Generally, what are your thoughts?

Group 5 (17)

(So sorry for the lateness it didn't let allow me to post until I changed something on my settings.)

In our discussion we talked about Kierkegaard and his opinions about how people went to church and worshiped. Kierkegaard insisted that faith was by its very nature irrational, a passion rather than a provable belief. He believed that nothing should keep you from a direct link to God, like a priest or a church.Kierkegaard also coined the phrase "leap of faith."

Our factual question was What did Kierkegaard known to criticize ? The answer is Christendom

Our discussion question was Do you believe that passion is key to a meaningful existence?

Next

Next is Exam #1, for sections 16 &17 on Wednesday & H1 on Thursday. I'm working on getting the Powerpoint slideshows up on this site but am encountering technical difficulties. I do have the "transcripts" of the slides posted below, though, and the original slideshows are now visible at my Up@dawn blog.

Bear in mind that the exam will be based on the topics your groups have selected, but precise wording of the questions will differ. So the best way to study is to re-read the relevant sections in our texts that address those topics. Also, you should review all your section's posts on the CoPhilosophy site. Any relevant questions there are eligible for inclusion on the exam, whether or not they're in the Powerpoint file.

And note: if I find it necessary to supplement the exam with additional questions, I will draw from topics I've mentioned explicitly in my own relevant Up@dawn & Delight Springs posts on our class dates. You should review them as well.

We'll be re-grouping on exam day, so you should sit near those you wish to work with in October before the sign-up sheet comes around.

One more thing: there will be an "extra credit" option: select one of the discussion questions your group has come up with, and write two good paragraphs in response. You may bring the question with you to the exam.
