Section 8, Group 4

Last class we talked about William of Ockham who rejected Aristotle's Proof of God theory. His contribution to society was Ockham's razor which is used to simplify ideas and take away unnecessary principles. His theory is that to get the best out of logic, use the simplest explanation possible in all things.

FC: What was Ockham's actual name? William
DC: Why did Ockham shave so much?
What did the razor have to do with logic?

Discuss.

  1. Ockham believed in shaving down everything to the simplest form. He thought that it was best to take out all of the unnecessary elements of thought in order to simplify beliefs.

  2. For certain beliefs I would agree that it would be easier to understand if it was simplified. But on the other hand some other beliefs like Catholicism some small details are just as important as the main details. If everything was "shaved" down to its simplest form then there wouldn't be that "wow" factor to anything in life or beliefs.
