Section 9 Group 4

In our group discussion, we talked about the School of Athens. The painting is of several different philosophers. Each philosophers is holding a book that reveals their outlook on the things about life. We feel the importance of the painting is its location and who wanted the painting made. It is in the Vatican. The pope ordered for the painting to be painted. This shows, at one point of time, the Catholic church was open to the idea of philosophy.

Factual: Who painted the School of Athens?
-Raphael

Discussion: Do you believe all the philosophers in the painting would be able to coexist with one another?

5 comments:

  1. I feel like they would have been able to coexist. One of those agree to disagree situations. Many religious groups have had to do that in this day and age. Even though we have many views on religions and God, most everybody can exist peacefully together.

Factual: What was La Mothe le Vayer called?
    The Christian Skeptic

Discussion: Do you think that if you're a skeptic, it makes you an atheist?

  4. I agree that, although people do tend to disagree a lot, most people are able to find common ground and coexist peacefully. I think this is true for philosophers as well.

(Factual) - When was the School of Athens painted?

(Discussion) - Is it possible to still be ambitious and motivated if you're a person who constantly doubts, such as a skeptic or cynic?

  5. It would probably make them all better philosophers as they could compare theories and what not to come to a clearer understanding of their ideas.
