11/4 Libertines

Libertine comes from the Roman word "liber" which means "free".  Basically these Libertines were the first free-thinkers.

Most Libertines are very well known for things we learn about today.  Issac la Peyrere developed the idea of "pre-Adamism" which is the belief that humans were around before the story of creation began.  Our group did not have a very certain statement on that.  We discussed our beliefs on creation and evolution and came to the conclusion that yes, we did evolve; however, there was some form of creation other than a random big bang that started the entire world.  Something had to have set this creation in motion.

Other Libertines were Martin Mersenne who insinuated that we use our senses to investigate the world present to us.  But whether or not we trust our senses will help us discover the phenomena as they appear to us.
Pierre Gassendi showed atomism explains how the earth could have made itself but that God made the atoms.  Which brings us back to creation.

I wish I could find a video, in Futurama's episode A Clockwork Origin, the professor was in a battle with the creationist on Earth about evolution.  When he had believed he had lost that battle, he decided to go live on a lifeless planet on the other side of the galaxy.  After he arrived he inserted his nanobots that he designed to purify water into his only water source.  After the water was purified, the nanobots had evolved.  After about 4 days of being trapped on the planet, the nanobots had evolved into a thriving society that the gang had witnessed.

Questions:
What did the Libertines question?  Skepticism.

What do you think about creation and evolution?  Do you think they both occured?  What is your evidence?

  1. I agree with what you stated, Eryn, that there is a mix of both evolution and creation that began the world. I think that whatever creative force there is designed humans so that we can evolve, both mentally and physically, and can adapt to our surroundings.

Who developed the idea of "Pre-Adamism?"
    Isaac la Peyrere

Do you think it is easier to accept the idea of creation or evolution? Why/why not

  2. I double agree lol everything is too complexand intricate for it to just somehow appear there has to be a creator. And evolution is a very useful tool that we have used to afapt to oir surroundings.

    1. What were the libertines sometimes called?(the erudite libertines)

    2. What does evolution mean to you?

  3. I am unable to find my group post so i will comment on this groups post. I am torn as of right now on the evolution n creation debate while i believe that god did create the heavens and the earth and all the thing that inhabit it however i can not dispute the evidence that has been discovered backing the theory of evolution. Perhaps they do coexist or maybe it is just one or the other, I as of right now have not come to an absolute conclusion, so i will push on trying to discern between these
