Taoist of Two

Last time we talked about Pomponazzi's view on the soul being, the soul and body are basically one so once the body dies, so does the soul. We also talked about his assesment of how heaven and hell should not be used as threats in order to encourage people to live morally right. We discussed how even though someone may not be living a completely good lifestyle, they still try to make it appear that way because of the threats of heaven and hell. Also, we discussed how Machiavelli's statement about how a ruler had to sometimes lie and make false promises just to keep order. We related that to the presedential campaigns going on now and how that practice is commonly used to gain favor from voters.

  1. I agree that the prospect of heaven and hell should not be used to coerce people into a certain way of living. In fact, I wonder how many Christians would act if they were never exposed to that particular part of the theology.

FQ:Which book did Bruno have to preface with instance that he was not joking?
A: On the Infinite Universe and Worlds

DQ:When Bruno says, "I ask now whether this space which indeed containeth the world is better fitted to do so than is another space beyond?" he seems to echo Voltaire in Candide. Do you think that this is the "Best of all possible worlds"?

  2. Yes that would be interesting to see how many Christians behaved as Christians should if the idea of hell was taken out of the equation and we were just told to live righteous to honor God rather then to avoid hell.
