taoist of two

Last class we talked about the question of if God is almighty, why doesn't he show himself, and we discussed how maybe he has shown himself, or maybe we have all experienced his essence but just don't realize it. We also discussed pantheism and how in a sense God truly is in everything because he created people who create objects. For example, if a person writes a book, God is, in some sense, in that book because the author put effort and heart into it, and God created the author. Finally, we talked about how we disagree with the way the Church, past and present, interacted with nonbelievers and doubters.

thoughts and comments!

  1. DQ: Continuing our discussion of pantheism, do you think that Descartes' views on God and the world are/were simply a more socially acceptable form of pantheism?

FQ:What did Descartes believe about free will?
A: "No one, not human beings, not God, could have free will."

  2. i think that God doesn't show himself, because that would totally defeat the point/purpose/concept of faith. If we "saw God" all the time and it was clear, i think it would dilute the power of belief. I do believe that everyone has experienced God or some spirituality in some form. Why else would we have religion period? Religion is like the way that humans make a sense of spirituality.

FQ: what was Descartes first work?
    FA: "The World"

DQ: Can humans trust information brought in from the senses and interpreted by the mind?

  3. I wasnt in class for this discussion but I'm going to attempt to post anyway. I think that the reason God doesn't show himself to us physically is because the religion itself is supposed to function off of faith. There is a verse in the bible that states, "faith is being sure of what we hope for, and certain of what we cannot see". I believe that without faith, the religion does not function properly and this is why God does not physically show himself to us in this life.

DQ: Did Descartes use his views of God to create a form of pantheism that was more acceptable in modern day society?

  4. I agree with what everyone else is saying, what is the point of faith if God showed himself? He asks us to believe in him based on faith.
