Group 1- Section 9. March 12th Post.

Today our group discussed falsafah. Islamic philosophy is a branch of Islamic studies, and is a longstanding tradition in the compatibility between aql which is reason and iman which is faith. Basically, falsafah is pretty self explanatory. Every in our group agreed that philosophy could somewhat be considered a religion. We thought the fact that Islam sees falsafah as a threat to Islamic religion is silly. The idea of falsafah is interesting, although very simple. It sounds like a very complex idea, yet it means one thing: philosophy. There wasn't much else to discuss about it.

Fact: Falsafa is a Greek loanword meaning ______.

Answer: Philosophy.

Discussion: Do you think philosophy can be considered a religion or does it go against everything philosophy is about?

  1. I think philosophy could be considered a religion, but only by those who don't practice another religion. I don't think the majority of people would consider philosophy a religion. I think Catholics and Baptists would have a big problem with it.

    For March 14th:

Fact: Maimonides was a ______ philosopher.

Discussion:Was Maimonides' use of apophatic theology effective?

  2. It is my view that every train of thought could be viewed as a philosophy on life, especially if it contains an opinion. For instance, that last sentence was a philosophy. So, by that definition, religion could very easily be classified as philosophy. However, to classify philosophy as a religion is kind of a stretch. For example, my philosophy on the smoking ban at mtsu is very opinionated, but I would not classify it as religion. It really depends what the individual philosophy in question addresses and how many people share the same view.

Fact: Maimonides was a scholar of what?
    Answer: The Torah

Discussion: Is there evil in the world?

  3. I still think they are pretty much one and the same. They both describe belief systems that guide people's way of thinking. I suppose it can be argued that they contradict each other, but different religions contradict themselves and other philosophies certainly can't coexist; so I don't really see a difference.

fact: _______ was a code by Mainmonides of Jewish law that intended to guide Jews on how to behave in all situations.

    answer: Mishneh Torah

Discussion: Mainmonides states that since we cannot understand the purpose of God, we should not question it. Should we always obediently follow a text and do "what's best for us," or is there a point where "because I said so" is no longer good enough?

  4. 'Philosophy' is a very broad term. I believe all religions are a form of philosophy.

    Austin, you mean there's a smoking ban @ MTSU? I hadn't noticed...

Fact Question: How many "principles of faith" were there according to Maimonides?

    Answer: 13

Discussion Question: Do you agree with Mainmonides that we cannot truly understand the purpose of God?

  5. Philosophy and religion can coexist, just look at the Muslim nations of the 9th through 13th centuries.

Fact: Maimonides' position within the Jewish faith was as ____.
    Answer: Rabbi

Discussion: Maimonides believed that no discrepency could exist between God's truth and science. How could he justify this?
