Section 9 Group 4 3/21

Our group discussed whether or not being a skeptic makes a person an atheist. Over all the group agreed that just because a person is skeptical and asks questions about his religion does not mean that he is an atheist. We thought that it is natural for people doubt religion.

Fact: Who wrote about the "divine sextus"?
Francois de la Mothe le Vayer

Discussion: Le Voyer thought scientific research was silly, are you ever skeptical about ideas, despite scientific findings? Does this make you a skeptic?

  1. Yes, I do agree that just because you question certain aspects of your religion, it doesn't make you an atheist. If anything, it can push you to discover the answer and maybe make your faith stronger.

What "masterwork" is Hobbes most known for today?
    Leviathan

Do you think you can be atheist but still believe in God, like Hobbes did?

  2. I feel as if you can be a skeptic and still be religious and faithful. Just because you raise questions in your mind about your religion doesn't necessarily mean you don't believe in it, as long as you a question is reaffirmed with an answer that supports your belief in said religion.

(Factual) - What did Hobbes establish in Leviathan?
    A: Social contract theory

(Discussion) - Is it possible to have a civilized society without something like the social contract?

  3. I agree with you guys, especially the opinion that skepticism in religion can lead to better understanding and ultimately strengthening religion. Skepticism in religion is a good thing as long as it is not taken to far because is can lead to someone renouncing their faith.
