Section 8 special group 6 Nathan Elisha Justin & Ray

Our group read through the Doubt book about the Traditionalists, the Shiites, and the Mutazilis. And we had our main focus on the Traditionalists and the Mutazilis. Differences are simply about the economic, political, and it's social issues. The Mutazilis came to believe that the essence of God was justice itself. The reason to this is because it preserved free will. They figured to make "our own decisions" because God could do no sin. The Traditionalists attacked the Mutazilis for just this, and in response let it be known that "it was actually all in God's hands. And some Traditionalists even felt that the Mutazilis had removed all religious value of God from their philosophical concepts.

Some more discussion. I can see where the Traditionalists and the Mutazilis had a big disagreement because religion can be very personal. And it was clear that both groups had different views about how they viewed God even. And because the Mutazilis saw that God was not a sinner, they figured that they could have their own free will & and to do what they want basically. This is where the disagreement happened between the Traditionalists and the Mutazilis.

Factual question. On page 219, the book goes into what a "peeved Muhammad" was quoted on after the al-Ashari had another dream of the Prophet and was at this time "instructed to not be such a fanatic about it." What was this Muhammad quoted on?
"I did not tell you to give up rational arguments, but to support the true hadiths!"

  1. The Traditionalists seemed to be much stricter in their views than the Mutazilis. I find it crazy how the Traditionalists even went on to ban any rational discussion of God. This just goes to show how much power religion has over people.
