Section 8 group 5 march 21

We discussed Ricci and his methods for preaching Christianity. We compared his use of technology to gain attention with today's "super churches". Also we briefly touched on whether we thought he was doing a good thing or simply adding confusion to a already complex situation.

FQ: Matteo Ricci was founder of the Catholic missions of what?
A: China.

DQ: What is your take on Ricci's use of technology in comparison to the churches of today's use of it?

  1. F: English deism was much enlivened with __________ __________.
    A: John Locke

Discussion: What is your interpretation of Locke saying that we are born with a mind that has a blank slate? All knowledge comes from sense and experience.

I think churches more so now a days do use advanced technology to draw in some crowds of people for attendance etc. Some of it is nice and some I think is quite unnecessary. Certain people might be drawn in by that sort of thing (what's most popular and what church everybody goes to), but people must remember the real reason for going to church. I think it's become a bigger issue since technology is advancing.

  2. Factual:English deism started with what philosopher?
    Answer: Edward Herbert

Discussion:Do you believe that you have a blank slate mind at birth or are you born with innate traits that make you a certain way?

I believe most people are drawn to church now by how big it is and what can I do there. Technology has made people who believe a certain way stray away from traditional beliefs that they may of once had.

  3. I think technology in a church is a bit weird because when I think about church I think of the Bible and a person teaching its ways.

    Q. What do you think about Locke and his idea that thinking could not appear in the universe if it had not come from a thinking thing.

    Q. Who believed God was not free?
    A. Anthony Collins

  4. I honestly would be fine with the Jesus' style, sitting on a rock talking about God. I don't think that so much technology is necessary.

    FQ: Who enlivened English Deism?
    A: John Locke.

DQ: Do you think "I think, therefore I am" is a reasonable statement?
