Section 9 Group 4 Hypatia

In the last class we talked about Hypatia and how important and under appreciated she is in the world of philosophy as a whole.  She isn't necessarily unappreciated because she did anything wrong, but because so little is known about her.  We can only speculate how great she would have been had she not been killed.  We agreed that she would be extremely important and that people would know her name had she not been murdered.

Factual Question:  Where was the school located that she was the head of?
A:  Alexandria

Discussion Question:  Do you feel if Hypatia had not been murdered that she would be as well known as Socrates, Aristotle, or Plato?

  1. I feel that if she had not been killed she would have been more well known, maybe not as well known as Socrates, Aristotle or Plato. It probably also would have been a while before people appreciated her.
