Section 9 Group 5 Postmodernism and New Age Philosophy

Sorry this is a little late, guys. I had some technical difficulties with this one. Anyways, last class period we had a very interesting discussion about Postmodernism and New Age philosophy. This discussion mainly centered around the Postmodernist thought that there really is no Truth and what this would mean for the future of philosophy. What would this leave philosophers to do? Would philosophy, instead of being a constant search for the Truth, become merely an examination of different ways of talking and thinking instead? Would giving up on the ancient, omniscient Truth open up venues for thought on questions that may one day actually have an answer? Would this loss of the sense of Truth mean the death of philosophy as it has came to be known, or is a rebirth, a continuation of something that has intrigued minds for centuries?
We also talked about New Age philosophy, and all that it had to offer, or the perceptions of what it had to offer. See, New Age philosophy is in a sense, if I quoted Dr. Oliver right, "The idea that reality is subject to manipulation by how we (individually) think about the world." So, basically, the world is open to change just based on how we view things, our own perceptions of the world we are stuck in. In a way, this almost seems to be a short-cut, an easy answer to the hard questions in life. If one wants to be successful, all one has to do is perceive themselves as successful. If everything you believe is based upon something that is solely founded in your perception of things rather than some basic truth or principle, how are you ever right? or wrong?

Fact Q1. The main thought/fear to Postmodernism is what?

Answer: That it is the death of philosophy.

Thought Q2. Is there an all-encompassing truth?

  1. Haha it's all good, i thought the last class talk was interesting given the stance on post modernism and everyone's opinion on it.

    1) What does post modernism suggest?
Western philosophy has run its course.

    2) Do you feel that this is true, why or not?
