Midterm: Blog #1 Philosophy and Social Media

I’m doing my project on Philosophy and different types of social media.  Social media has impacted our lives individually more so now than ever.  Starting with my first example, Facebook.  Facebook was created in 2004 and now has 840 million active users across the world.  Facebook has become increasingly popular amongst teenagers across the world and recently has become more popular throughout what we consider our parents generation.

I personally believe Facebook has created a huge impact on every day life.  Some see Facebook as having a positive or negative impact on individuals.  I will definitely have to agree with both.  Facebook has been able to reach out to those people you haven’t seen in years.  (some that you want to see and some that you don’t)  It has its pros and cons with one of the major cons being privacy.  No matter if you have ever posted something on Facebook, it will always be there.  There are certain ways to track every Facebook and the history that you have posted throughout time.  This brings me to my first question, how much privacy does an individual really have?  Does Facebook know our Facebook passwords?

Not only can Facebook be positive and/or negative, but also I believe some people truly rely on Facebook to try and develop social skills just for every day life.  You see more and more every day on how to develop a relationship online or you communicate through groups maybe for class through Facebook.  I’m currently in the college of mass communication and I know that there’s a page about journalism that everyone posts in on a daily basis.  Can that be beneficial?  Maybe.

Now, you can download an app and have Facebook on your phone all day every day.  Let’s be honest, how many times do you really get bored in class and check your Facebook just because.  There’s not a reason to, but you just do it to see what is going on.  I think it has become very abused as a website and is another form of procrastination.  I am guilty of being on Facebook 24/7 but who isn’t?  How far will this really go?  Also, I love how everyone calls it “Facebook stalking” but really I ran into a girl the other day who knew my dog’s name.  It’s starting to get a little creepy.  Thoughts?

If nobody "likes" your status or if nobody "likes" your profile picture, how disappointed are you going to be?  I know some that would throw a fit.  Take for instance as soon as you get "tagged" into a photo, do you instantly run to the computer to look at it, or do you get notifications on your phone so you can view it from there.  You only have 100 friends? Gah you're such a loser...I mean you literally hear things like this every day knowing that you only talk to probably 10 of your 5,000 friends.  We all know it's true, so why have so many?  Is this a popularity contest.  Some of them are probably going through your pictures and judging your right now.  So what is the real purpose of Facebook?  Maybe we should all "fast" from Facebook and see if this makes us happier people because I honestly think it causes more bad than good. Just a thought...and for those of you that "poke" people, that's creepy too.  Don't do it.  Just a word of advice.
