11/3 epictetus feb 23

on thursday our group talked about epictetus. he was a man who started as a slave in rome and ended up as a stoic philosopher from greece. He lived roughly 400 years after the school of Zeno was built and he focused on how people lived. his biggest points were happiness and to flourish.

1.) who admired epictetus?
answer: Thomas Jefferson.
2.) Do you feel that if someone spends most of their life preaching to others how to live, they are missing out on many important aspects of life themselves?

  1. No I feel that one who preaches to others how to live, has a understanding of life as a whole. Therrefore, they are capable to fulfilling both duties.

  2. I agree with Trey. However, if it comes to a point where he/she is going out of the way to identify and fix the way that people are living, then I would think the person preaching is somewhat of a hypocrite. Also, isn't this ideal way of life just one person's opinion?
