Section 11, Group 1: Russel and Wittgenstein

When our group discussed Russel, the topic largely centered itself on what he mentioned was "free love" in a closed-minded society. He openly blamed the Christian mindset on, what we believe he was same sex relations, their unwillingness to look past the bible and more about what love truly means. Later on, however, he would go on to say that the act of reproducing is a priority-yet no reason can be justified for hating so harshly. We looked at Russel like he was meant to be in the Beatles, and thier own kind of philosophy. They preached about love not like it was only for a man and a woman, but for the world. Like peace between countries. When Russel reflected on how wars start, he held a pacifist view, saying that "the world is horrible". These types of views can be compared to modern life, and how war seems to do nothing but cause more problems. We agree with Russel and his opinion on love, especially today where same sex marriage is common. More and more, we like to believe that it is the minority that hates, and our generation is becoming widely accepting. Russel would be proud.
As for Wittgenstein, he was less controversial. Coming from an educator's background, he found reason in philosophy through language after redefining Russel's theory. We weren't a huge fan of Wittgenstein, he was too logical and didn't challenge many ideas.

Questions:

1.(Factual) What was the name of Wittgenstein's book? Tractus Logico-Philosophicus.

2.(Discussion) How do you picture the world? Logically? Ideally?

  1. The way I see the world is in the same way as Wittgenstein. I've always been very logical in my point of view because of my future profession in medicine. I think the world has its good and its bad. People, like the media, only see the bad things and only want to talk about those bad things. There is still good left in this world. We just have to turn away from the computer or T.V. screen and look for it ourselves. I agree with Wittgenstein that language is fundamental to society. It's our only ways of communication without it we would be a silent world and no one would really know what was going on.

    Who is Jesus's father?
Was Jesus more of a teacher or a philosopher or both?

  2. I certainly do not picture the world as Wittgenstein did. I was more of a Russel kind of girl. I think war is wrong, and that everyone should be striving to get along with each other. For me, it's not about religion, but about how you view yourself as you grow into a better person.

    next:
    1. (Factual) What religion was Jesus?
    2. (Discussion) Why do you think it is that Christianity has divided itself so much? Do you think Jesus would have wanted that?

  3. i agree with both you brittany. i believe that there is still good left in the this world.however, the media choose to focus on only the negative (theft, violence ect) and leave out the positive traits of humanity (people are constantly volunteering to help the less fortunate, weather it be physically helping out, starting a fund raiser, or just being there for a total stranger) which in turn makes the world look alot worst than it actually is., i also agree with melissa, im not a very religious person however i feel that ever human has a moral responsibility to treat others with respect, and kindness regardless of weather or not they believe the devine we be gifted with eternal life or not.
