Section 8 MidTerm Post 1 Logan Davis: Philosophy and Baseball

Is bunting to break up a nohitter unethical?
It is said by many, mostly pitchers, that bunting late in the game during a possible no hitter is one of the most unethical feats of baseball.  First, I would like to point out a few of these terms before I begin my discussion for those of you who don't watch baseball.  First, a no hitter is a game in which a pitcher records twenty-seven outs without surrendering a single hit.  This is one of more rare events of the game of baseball.  On average, over the last ten years, only two no hitters are recorded each year.  Next, a bunt is when a hitter simply sticks out his bat in attempt to make contact with the pitch and hopefully catch the fielders off guard.  Now, the reason that most say that this is unethical during a no hit attempt is simply this...It is too easy to luck up and get a hit off of a bunt in a high pressure situation.  Usually, during these no hit attempts the fielders are playing back and it becomes more easy to lay down a bunt and beat the throw to first. This is another common argument on the side of the pitcher.  They believe that they have worked way too hard to have their feat ended by something such as simple as a bunt.  I personally believe that this move is not unethical.  It is my belief that it is the job of the hitter to get on base by whatever means necessary.  Who cares if it is by bunting.  I believe that the pitcher should be reliant on his defenders to make a play and get the hitter out.  Though some may say that this event is "bush league", it is my personal belief that it is simply the hitter doing whatever is possible to help his team win the game.  If you would like to read more about this topic and see in instance just last year of it actually happening, check out this link http://ethicsalarms.com/2011/08/01/ethics-quiz-is-bunting-to-break-up-a-no-hitter-unethical/.
