Group 1 Section 16 Philosophazers

Our section was Decartes and Montaigne...

factual question: Montaigne had recommended tolerance, whereas Decartes recommended reason. True or False?

Discussion:

Is there anyway to prove something absolutely?

Yes.

Se what I did there? I just proved that question's answer, with itself. The are absolutes in this world, but sometimes those absolutes are beyond our comprehension, or more so, they are relative. Relative to time and space, and other higher end phenomena. Even time and space are relative to where one is looking. The short answer, I think, would be "no," but that would upset the understanding we have in place for the universe. If we thought that there might be someway to control then society might fall apart, or misuse such powers. I suppose it isn't so much as there are absolutes, but rather, that absolutes are necessary....

  1. Yes. Absolutes are logically consistent concepts like 1+1=2.

  2. I believe so, yes. I don't think there is an absolute for everything, but certainly there are for some. Just like Brett said, 1+1=2.
