Group 5 (16)

On September 12th's class, the group talked about Plato. We discussed how it was strange and hypocritical of Plato to be a philosopher, yet "advocates the use of artistic censorship, the banning of subversive poetry" (page 38). Plato essentially wanted to live in an Utopia; from that we came up with the question:

Is working for the greater good of everyone (Utopia) always best?

  1. I don't believe that working for an Utopia is always best. Of course, for most people, when they work towards a goal, they want to hurt as little people as possible, but sometimes it can't be fair for everyone and sacrifices have to be made. I believe most people feel this way too. Think about how many times in your life that you have been told or have said,"Life isn't fair".
Also, the Utopia that Plato was working for isn't much of a Utopia if it isn't enriched with the arts they he was wanting to ban and censor. But maybe "Utopia" can be a relative term.
