Group 3 (017) Hebrew Philosophy

My groups topic was Hebrew Philosophy. We discussed the relevance of Jennifer Hect's thoughts and gave our personal opinions about them. Upon doing this, we questioned the validity of her argument. We agreed that philosophers tend to leave out the serpent (or the devil). The serpent is relevant because he requested permission from God to attack Job. We also agreed that Job was trying to come up with reasons why God let it happen to him and that is the reason why God responded the way he did. The questions we collectively came up with are as follows.

Q: Were the Hebrews the only people that were considered as chosen?
A: No, Throughout the Bible their were other groups of people that were considered (or considered themselves) as chosen including the Jews.

Q:Why does God favor some people and not others?

We all came up with differing answers to this question so we decided to leave this on e open for comments. Feel free to comment people!

  1. If Christians argue that God loves everyone equally, than there should be no room for favoritism.

I personally dont think god shows favoritism. The christians believe that God accepts all to come to him. it would then go without saying that God blesses those he consideres his, I dont think that is favoritism. A parent would of course give things to their children because they love them and want the best for them, yet most parents dont give those same priveledges to a strangers child that they dont know. Therefore, If we're speaking of unjust favoritism, with no specefic reason other than "i just dont want to" then I dont think that God shows favoritism.

  3. If favoritism is a part of God's plan, then what is the purpose of loving your neighbor as yourself? If God only loved his followers, then why would God seek out those who don't believe or who question? I feel the main problem that all Christians deal with is the very same situation that Job was placed in. Why do I get the short end of the stick while these nonbelievers are all successful and worry-free? Some belief systems do think they are "holier than thou", but in my opinion, this belief accomplishes nothing and sets followers up to fail.

Ignorance is what leads those who do not test their faith, not God.

  4. The favoritism seems to only occur in death. If god didn't prefer some to others in death then there would be no need for the religion to have a hell. But if he preferred some to others in life then there could be no free will, therefore condemning many to an eternal afterlife of suffering. It is the free will that fuels choices to be made that can gain favoritism in the end.
