Group 5 (17)

(So sorry for the lateness it didn't let allow me to post until I changed something on my settings.)

In our discussion we talked about Kierkegaard and his opinions about how people went to church and worshiped. Kierkegaard insisted that faith was by its very nature irrational, a passion rather than a provable belief. He believed that nothing should keep you from a direct link to God, like a priest or a church.Kierkegaard also coined the phrase "leap of faith."

Our factual question was What did Kierkegaard known to criticize ? The answer is Christendom

Our discussion question was Do you believe that passion is key to a meaningful existence?

  1. Religions in general, not just Christianity, create institutions separate from the rest of the world. From icons to poetry to art, there is an entire realm within religion that deviates from the rest of the world's experience. Kierkegaard's attack on the institution of Christianity can be seen as an attempt to remove all the intermediaries between the pious and God. The distracting elements and the priest, who at times are seeking to serve themselves, interfere with the true goal of religion. Yes maybe, Kierkegaard was a little too negative with his critique but his message of personal connection and conviction with God and not reliance on the guidance of others at least has some merit.

  2. In my opinion Kierkegaard was on an extreme point of views, but I do see valuable lessons to take away from his theories. Upon looking at the history of the church I believe the corruption of man when power is present is presented, almost in no better case.
