  1. Virtue is defined as moral excellence. As humans we are taught by our peers, teachers, parents, and even our religious teachings that we should try and embody good traits. Virtue in my opinion is a very valuable human possession because few can ever truly be completely virtuous. As humans we have emotions and attitudes of lush, envy, pride, and ego that sometimes even with the best of intentions come up. Regardless any individual that strives to be a good person is on the right path of virtue.

  2. I agree with Socrates. Our moral excellence is our most prized possession. To me, virtue is like our credibility. Your credibility is shot if your moral excellence lacks.

  3. I also agree with Socrates. A virtuous character is extremely important for humans to have. Goodness is something each of us should strive for, and I think Socrates states this idea well with his reference to virtue. I also think the ability to love is very important for humans to be successful as part of a society.

I agree with a lot of Socrates' ideas, and I found this video of some of his quotes:

Although I don't completely agree with everything Socrates said/believed, I think he had some valid and thought-provoking opinions.

  4. Virtue is a very subjective term in this context, and Socrates probably had a more literal- personal meaning when he was quoted in saying this. What one person views as virtuous is different for people with different views/culture. Having said this I believe that an individuals's knowledge and intuition is our most prized possession. As humans we are given our brain to reason. This includes moral behavior; how to live everyday, our views from right and wrong and the ability to do what is best for ourselves, others, and humanity.

There are some more points to be raised, but we can talk about that in class.

  5. I have to agree with Socrates that virtue is the most valuable of human possesions. Everyone is gifted with intelligence but our virtues are what guides us in how we use our intelligence. What does it matter if we have the intelligence and ability to fix a social problem but not the drive that makes us want to fix it.
