"The pluralistic form takes for me a stronger hold on reality than any other philosophy I know of, being essentially a social philosophy, a philosophy of 'co'"-William James
How does the new brand of skepticism compare to the Renaissance version? skepticism in the older form is stricter then todays use of the word. skeptic used to mean that one strictly did not believe in anything. Which is ironic because if you label yourself as a skeptic wouldn't that mean that you believe in that view. Todays view on skepticism is more about having a questioning attitude and being discerning towards other views you hear. They often challenge authority because they don't see why the rules are the way they are.
Skepticism in the form they used to look at it is alien to me. I can't imagine choosing to not believe in anything. I would not feel like I had a place in life if I never took a stand on anything. However, it does seem to me that by declaring yourself a skeptic you are going against the whole idea of skepticism. Although I do not agree with building ones life around skepticism, I think that everyone has a little skepticism in them on some points in life.

I agree with Ace. It's difficult to believe truly in something if you believe that you can't commit to anything.
