Group 3 - 17

The factual question we posed from the section on Skepticism was :

Who started the idea of Skepticism?

A. Pluto
B. Socrates
C. Pyrrho
D. None of the above

Our discussion question was :

How big of a role does doubt play in wisdom?

In addition to this we also had some very thought provoking questions and varying answers to the other questions posed during discussion. One such question was - Can you live in doubt and also have faith in something that you can't see? One answer to this was if there is reason to doubt something then doubt should be placed. Such as helping to confirm beliefs, however if you just doubt everything then you in fact know nothing.

There was also a line of when doubting is acceptable in terms of gaining knowledge. The line was Doubting in order to learn, as opposed to doubting because one refuses to believe. An example would be doubting evolution as a theory because you refuse to try and line it up with your religious beliefs.

One comparison was made to why doubt is necessary through all of this. It was :

Good: Evil::Faith: Doubt

Stating that doubt is as necessary as evil to confirm that there is in fact a reason to believe or that there is a contrary to evil in the world, good.

It was also decided that many are too skeptical of other peoples' beliefs, such as Pluto, where the attention of the skepticism and doubt should be placed on your own personal beliefs. This way gaining knowledge of what you believe is the primary goal.

  2. Well, it doesn't seem that my past response was posted...

    Wisdom can only come from doubt. Only through questions can we ever find the answer. I like to compare it to the average college classroom. There are students who do the bare minimum and get by with a passing grade. They won't retain any information they ""learned" through the semester; they only accept the facts at face value and don't try to reflect on them. However, the students that do put the time to understand something and question the things being told to them will not only do well in the class, but actually LEARN something that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

    In conclusion, being involved with your beliefs and your knowledge can only make you stronger.
