Group #2 - Section 017

Group #2 - Sec. 017:

In the group meeting we have discussed many aspects of Stoicism and its

Philosophy. We first asked where did Stoicism first originated? And how did it influence the Greeks? And why do Stoics believe that destructive emotions resulted from errors in judgment? What was the single most successful and longest lasting movement in Greek-Roman Philosophy?

We have also talked about Man’s place in this Universe and how it is connected to Philosophy and Stoicism. What is the place of man in the universe? Is man the highest fruit of the universe or is he just an insignificant speck in infinite space—or something in between? Does the spirit of man descend into matter from higher spiritual realms, or has it evolved from matter? Is the universe conscious or unconscious of man? If it is aware, is it warm and friendly to him, or cold and indifferent, or even hostile? Can a Man live with no emotions? And why do our lives evolve around feeling and emotions?

Personal Note:

“Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful.

  2. In my opinion it is stupid to be a stoic. What makes life so great and profound is all the ups and downs, the good times and the bad times. I think that part of the stoics philosophy is that you never will be let down if you don't get your hopes up for anything. That is just stupid. Going through valleys in life make you appreciate the peaks more.

  3. I believe the place of man is to repopulate the world and keep it alive. Man is spiritually suppose to worship a God and live holy!

I think we are the highest fruit of the universe... We are indeed the most intelligent and we have all the accomplishments. ha

The Universe is conscious of us as human because we are the salt of the earth!

No, man can not live with no emotion at all because with out any emotion the earth would be boring not only that but emotion is everywhere from anger to envy to sorrow the around again.... Emotions are a huge part of us all!

  4. I agree with Matt, If we were stoic's then everyone would be numb and cookie cut. The great parts of life are the individual's that live and make it intresting.

  5. the stoics believed that emotions were irrational judgements that make people frustrated and unhappy, by minimizing your desires you will minimize your suffering.they believe that anger is pointless and can lead to self destruction; love and friendship can also be dangerous.
while some of this may be true, i believe that emotions are what makes us human. you will can not know the good without experiencing the bad. If you do not experience everything life has to offer, your not really living. your just watching life pass by. i do think that a person should learn how to control their emotions, and not let a bad thing ruin your entire day.

i do not think that we are the highest fruit in the universe, everything has a purpose in life. we need and depend on plants and animals to live. without them we are nothing. man needs nature as much as he needs his emotions. we need to feel inorder to live otherwise your more like a rock just sitting their than a human living life.

  6. It seems to me that the stoics basically were constantly "practicing" they're theory, but never really accomplishing it. They believed in the absence of all emotions, but there is just no way possible for that to be the case unless everyone you ever interact also has no emotion. So they technically never achieved their goal
