On and on and on and on and on (14-4) Infinity

What we would have discussed on Thursday would have been the idea of Infinity. What is infinity? According to A.W. Moore, there has been debate on how to define this, because in essence, infinity cannot be determined. The most logical way to wrap our minds around this concept is in mathematics. If you have any number, and half it again, and so on, you will never come to an ending point because any number can have a half of itself. Or a number line for example, you can go infinitely in either direction.
The story about the hotel to show the idea of infinity is an interesting one to me, because I can't quite understand how an infinite hotel can ever be full with infinite people, but everyone can move down a room and now we have room? The idea of infinity is extremely difficult to comprehend. Think about space. Buzz Lightyear's catchphrase : "To infinity, and beyond"... what is beyond infinity? Or is there anything because infinity is... infinite?

As I was driving home last night I was thinking about this topic. Looking up at the sky, knowing that we are part of a huge universe, galaxy, space, but is space infinite? If so, HOW?

FQ: What are the two problems in identifying Infinity?
Answer: Some say that it cannot be defined, and when people do try to define it, philosophers cannot seem to come to a consensus.

DQ: What does infinity mean to you?

  1. When I think of Buzz Lightyear's catch phrase "To Infinity and Beyond," I have to ask myself "Is there really anything beyond infinity?" When I was a kid watching Toy Story, I never caught this because I had never been introduced to the term "infinity." However, now that I have been exposed to it, I think that you can't have anything beyond infinity. Infinity to me means to be so big that there is nothing to describe it. Therefore, I believe that you can't have anything beyond infinity. Although, it is a catchy phrase!
