14-4 Possible Exam Questions

I've gone through every post Matt or I have published and have found these Questions. I do not have a Factual Question for the "Yuk" factor, and for Kymlicka. Comment below if you have any other questions we can use for the exam or the 5 you think would best be suited for a test (There are only 6 that I found haha)

Wendy Brown: Tolerance
Factual Question: Wendy Brown believes that tolerance is an important part of equality.

Answer: False. Ms. Brown's view of tolerance is that it implies an inequality that is put up with rather than dealt with.
Discussion Question: Could we, as a society, tolerate zombies? Would they be second-class citizens? Would we classify them as "sub-human" and treat them just as animals?

Will Kymlicka: Minority Rights
DQ: Should minority groups be required to learn English?

Anne Phillips: Multiculturalism
Factual Question: Multiculturalism is based on what three ideas?
Answer: 1. Cultural identity matters to an individual.

2. We should not expect everyone to adopt the values and traditions of the dominant group.
3. Public policy implies that laws will reflect values and practices of the dominant group. This bias needs to be justified or undone.

Discussion Question: At what point should “we” infringe our beliefs and ideologies onto a minority group?

Miranda Fricker: Testimonial Injustice
Factual Question:
Does Fricker see credential excess as an injustice? If not, explain why.
Answer: No, she does not see credential excess as an injustice because it is giving MORE credit where it is due, not less. She does not see it as harming the person she is giving the extra credentials too, but more to the person she is taking away from.

Kwame Appiah: Cosmopolitanism
Factual Question: True or False: According to Kwame Appiah, being a Cosmopolitan means placing more importance on being a "citizen of the world" than being a citizen of your local community.

Answer: False! Appiah suggests that one of the best things about his idea of Cosmopolitanism is that while we should share citizenship with everyone, we can and should feel more strongly attached to our local or national community, and identify with others from our own culture.
Discussion Question: Is Cosmopolitanism a viewpoint we should or should not adopt?

Alexander Nehamas: Friendship
Factual Question:
True or False -Nehamas believes that friendships can be immediate and do not need to develop over time.
Answer: False. A true friendship takes times to develop and learn about the ins and outs of who a person is, not a one-time conversation.

Michael Sandel: Genetic Enhancement
Factual Question: According to Sandel, what is it we lose the most of when using PEDs in sports:

Answer: The human dimension and the appreciation in athlete themselves, rather than their pharmacist or engineer.
Discussion Question: Can genetic engineering lead to a better life?

  1. If we include The Infinity topic, then here is the Factual Question I posted.

FQ: What are the two problems in identifying Infinity?
Answer: Some say that it cannot be defined, and when people do try to define it, philosophers cannot seem to come to a consensus.

  2. Here's a question for Kymlicka:
Q: Why doesn't Kymlicka believe that minority rights should extend to polygamy or arranged marraiges, if it is part of the minority culture?
A: Kymlicka builds his minority rights views on the liberal basis of individual rights and equality of life chances. Minority customs or traditions which do not enhance liberty or individual freedoms are not supported by his view.
