Midterm Post #1 (Jake Goza H01)

Midterm Blog Post #1

So, here’s my first blog counting towards my midterm! Hooray! I’ll be talking about being gay, and how this affects me, my religion, my political beliefs, and whatever else I can think of that relates to our class! I think for this first post, I’ll talk about how being gay is morally none of anyone’s damn business, it’s repulsiveness is
We’ve all read in class Simon Blackburn’s concept of moral relativism: the idea that there are individual differences in morality, and that there are no absolute truths about any moral judgements we make. Everything is subjective and open to change. What’s right for you, may not be right for me. And in the case of homosexuality, what’s right for me, is a big man. Sorry if that’s not ok with you, that doesn’t really matter. I’m not forcing anyone else to like men with me, so in that regard, outside opinion shouldn’t come into consideration. But I sound a bit like I’m attacking people, and I apologize. Many people share this view, however I’ve been preached, yelled, and cursed at for being gay, so I tend to get defensive out of habit.
Maybe it would be easier to dissuade people from judging and rejecting homosexuals by explaining to them their dislike. It’s not Religion, as some people would claim. God doesn’t tell you to bully, suppress, and illegalize gay people, He says to hate their sin and pray for them while trying to minister the word to them. For the record, that’s never been a straight person’s reaction to me coming out (to be fair, it shocked most people). I’ve always either been acceptance or rejection. Any-who, I digress. People, and Americans in particular, seem to have developed a “Yuk” factor towards homosexuality. There’s no biological harm done when two men love each other (besides perhaps the loss of procreation between the two individuals, but adoption, surrogates, etc. are also options). Gay people don’t harm society, themselves, or disrupt the public peace. So then why are they looked at with revulsion? My mother constantly reminds me how unnatural and disgusting being gay is. Why? What if God then deemed homosexuality as morally ethical in accordance with the Bible and heterosexuality as a sin? Would all the Christians be ok with loving the same sex? Probably not: Which is why I believe a “Yuk” factor and not religion is responsible for the discrimination and discomfort people experience towards homosexuality.
I thought this tied in well with moral relativism because I think that people’s problem with me is completely prejudiced towards a “yuk” factor that has no legal ground to stand upon. People shouldn’t be allowed to project their prejudices onto the way that I live my life. This isn’t the 1960’s, stupid and oppressive prejudices should be abandoned and left behind, yet people cling to the idea that gay is bad, and gay marriage is worse (which will be a different post’s topic). If only they would realize the groundlessness of their disposition and that their opinion may be different than mine, but that doesn’t mean that they get to pursue a life of happiness with their wife and I get to spend a life full of lies and never get to marry and be with the man that I love.
Stay tuned for next week’s installment about gay marriage and how Southern Baptism has influenced me/how I dealt with church being gay! Hope this was ok, ha ha.

Why do you believe there is a "yuk" factor towards homosexuality? from what i see and experience everyday people are becoming more and more accepting of this lifestlye.

however; you said "people cling to the idea that gay is bad," yet you said yourself that christians are supposed to "hate their sin and pray for them while trying to minister the word to them." not " bully, suppress, and illegalize gay people", if you really believe this then aren't you agreeing that it is a sin and it in fact IS bad?

Disclaimer: simply playing devils advocate I am not saying whether i agree or disagree with this lifestyle choice and i am certainly NOT attacking you because of your preferences.
