I wonder if this could be because of the amount of information that can be gathered through the internet, also with being able to communicate with others and challenge each other via face time or any other form of chat.
No. The internet is making us more informed AND misinformed, probably not smarter. Universal education is making the general populace statistically smarter, but I doubt there are proportionately more smart people in positions of power and influence now. We have to figure out how to raise the civic IQ of democratic citizens, whose ignorance lately has been surpassed only by that of their chosen candidates.
