How would the Stoics respond to COVID-19?

In times of peril, such as a global pandemic spreading daily, I think we could all learn a thing or two from our perpetually calm friends, the stoics. Do you guys think this is the right mindset to have in a situation like this?

I hope this may ease your fears. It certainly did mine.

  1. I believe that we can learn a lesson from the stoics. Of course not take their philosophy completely seriously but simply take a deep breath and say to yourself that it will be alright. A lot of people during this time will end up hurting themselves more through stress than from any virus.

    2. I totally agree with you but sometimes a person need to share their feelings to reduce the stress around them

    3. I agree. The media is stressing the people out about this disease due to the fact that it doesn't discriminate. It attacks both the Rich and the Poor. Once the Wealthy and Elite are affected by something, the media will go crazy about it. If it doesn't effect them then they will become ignorant.

  2. Excellent advice, and the optimal mindset for uncertain times... so long as we're not TOO stoic, and continue to do what we can to ameliorate objective conditions as well as framing our subjective attitude. To me, this video is advocating for the position my old mentor John Lachs called Stoic Pragmatism... https://books.google.com/books?id=iMJJgovcgbcC&newbks=1&newbks_redir=0&lpg=PP1&dq=stoic%20pragmatism&pg=PP1#v=onepage&q=stoic%20pragmatism&f=false

  3. Easier said than done, but if everyone would just simply attempt to put them self in someone else's shoes I think everyone would be acting much more civil and calm

I do think keeping calm in situations like this can yield extremely productive plans. People in a state of panic, generally, tend to be rash, i.e. buying excessive amounts of supplies that will ultimately go to waste.

  5. This is excellent advice! I believe as long as we do our part we have no reason to worry. Stay at home, wash our hands, and don't stock up excessively on toilet paper. Easy.

    1. I agreed!!! The best way to protect ourselves from spreading the virus is to stay at home, unless there's an important events to attend. And wash hands for 20 seconds.

  6. I work at a grocery store and I have never seen the shelves be as empty as they have been recently. So many people have been panic buying that we now not only have to limit the number of items being sold, but also shorten our hours. The coronavirus has created a world-wide panic and while I agree we should take it seriously, I do not think we need to let our fear overcome us.

    1. Agreed. Actions motivated by fear are almost never sound. And actions motivated by personal greed, in a time of common hardship, are scurrilous.

  7. This calmness mentality remind of the time when the disciples where in the boat and a storm came (coronavirus) and the disciples ( us ) became scared and began panicking ( buying all the toilet paper and hand sanitizers) but they forgot Jesus was on the boat and he was calm and he told them they have such little faith and rebuked the wind and went back to sleep. Mark 4:39 In this time we must remain calm and realize what we are really fearing is death. But death is inevitable but that isn't to say don't wash your hands and be safe. But I am saying do what you can do and let the rest go so you can have peace.

I work for a 3rd party logistics company and let me tell you... it has been absolute hell since all of this has started. Luckily we don't have to deal with customers in person, but those online orders are crazy. We have been 10 hour days for the past 2 weeks because of the demand increase. It doesn't make it any easier when stores like Target and Walmart are having to double their order sizes just to keep up with greedy people.

Although we have no idea how to really combat the virus, I think a lot of us are freaking each other. The media doesn't make it any better either. I can't lie though, we did have to try and get as much food as possible since everyone was taking everything and we were scared that there wouldn't be anything left.

  9. In this case our inaction may be the best thing we can do. If not for ourselves then for others. If you have the mean to do so, then my vote is that you do. We can’t change what has already happened, but we can affect what will happen. #11
