"The pluralistic form takes for me a stronger hold on reality than any other philosophy I know of, being essentially a social philosophy, a philosophy of 'co'"-William James
In our presentation we will be reviewing the lives and the impact that Machiavelli and Hobbes have in philosophy. Machiavelli grew up in a small farm house about 20 miles outside of Florence, Italy. He was well educated and later became a diplomat after the fall of the Medici rule. He was later jailed and banned from the city of Florence and put on house arrest. This is when his most famous writing, The Prince, was started. The Prince is one of the most famous and moving pieces in the history of philosophy still today. Hobbes was an English philosopher who wrote Leviathan, which outlined some of the earliest forms of the social contract theory.
Discussion questions: Where do you think Machiavelli’s extreme beliefs and attitudes stemmed from?
Do you agree with what most believe Machiavelli’s sentiments are when it comes to ruling? Why or why not?
How do you feel about Hobbes idea of giving up our decisions on political and social to a single group?
Quiz questions: Where was Machiavelli born and what city was he later banned from?
What is Machiavelli’s most famous work, and what point was he trying to articulate in it?
Why did Hobbs say “My mother gave birth to twins: myself and fear.”
You too! I think we all need a good break! Section 6
