Last class we talked about 3  different things.  Can  universal love exist? We also  took on the Confucians vs. Mo Tzu school's  argument about whether having rulers and a leader is  a   hinderance  or if it   is  a  benefit.  Lastly we   spoke  briefly about  the  Art of War,  Vonnegut, and whether   Mo Tzu having security at his     school contradicted their  belief love....  now GIT HER   DONE!!!!

  1. Well, given the variety of philosophies and religions I don't think universal love could ever exist. The potential is there because most religions deal with the love of not only yourself but also other humans and nature. However, there would still be those who couldn't learn to love someone that has completely different beliefs than them. There would be other hinderances but to me, that would be the biggest. Also, rulers may not be completely necessary but leaders are. The idea of life without leaders came from Lao Tzu who, himself could be considered a leader due to his philosphical way of thinking that influenced many other. As humans we, more often than not, look for someone to follow. If that wasn't the case, many philosphies wouldve never been adopted by so many people.

Factual Question: The Stoics were known for their "almost fanatic" faith in what? Reason

Discussion Question: What do you think were some of the main reasons Stoicism was so popular in Rome at the time. Do you see traces of it's principles in any other religions?

  2. Well to agree with Kendal... Just kidding! Well you guys I would have to post on the universal love. Like I said in class I dont believe that there could ever be a thing as universal love. Because there are so many people in the world that have so much hate in the heart for people based on their race, nationality, sexual orientation, and etc. I just dont see how there could be such a thing, and also when people overseas hate us because were Americans. I do hope that one day people can be that loving, and peaceful but HaHaHa thats a funny idea. Well to get to the topic of having a leader or to not have a leader, I feel that a leader is very much so necessary to almost all causes because it puts someone in charge to vendicate for the group, to address the concerns of the people, and to give a mediator for discourse, and it just darn gives us someone to blame for the problems, or issues created. Well peace to all and I will do a question on my next post :/

  3. I want to post on the leaders and rulers argument. I believe that all leaders cannot be beneficial. For example, Hitler was considered a leader but a leader with the wrong kind of mission. Leaders such as the president of the United States are given power but also must have the majority of his decisions passed through others with power. I agree that leadership positions are almost required because without leaders, who would people look to for answers? Although, I believe that not all leaders are out for a good mission to benefit others besides themselves. I also think this ties into whether there will ever be world peace or not. Since the world is absolutely driven by leaders in almost every district of the world, that limits the possibilities of leaders cooperating with other leaders. This makes it nearly impossible for us to reach a peaceful conclusion leading to world peace.

  4. discussion question: do you think epicureanism encourages freedom from anxiety and peace of mind?
factual question: what was the longest movement in Greco-Roman philosophy? Stoicism

I think that universal love exists in death, because of death, and death is the path to universal love. Humans are flawed. As of the world right now....it ain't happenin! But I think that the most love is shown through death. eermmm. with regards to leadership, I think it's absolutely necessary. I think that most leaders hinder instead of help, but we cannot live in a world without it. It would be so chaotic. And also some people are just born with amazing leadership skills..... so if your born with it. its here to stay.
