Section 9, Group 4:Post 3

In our class, we discussed Socrates and what he believed and what we thought about what he believed. He was one that said that there was and answer to every basic question. Though he did not possess the answers, he believed that there was one. He wanted others to seek the answers for themselves. He never wanted to degrade or belittle anyone because of what they thought. He had a huge impact in the philosophical world because of the life he lived, and ultimately died from. He was killed for what he believed. Up until the last night before he died, his friends tried to get him out but he refused. He said, "I would rather die than give up philosophy." And that's exactly what he did.

Factual question: Who was the famous philosopher that was a student of Socrates?

Discussion question:Do you believe, like Socrates, that there is an answer to all the basic questions in life?

  1. Plato was the student of Socrates. I do not believe like Socrates, more so I believe as the Sophist Protagoras who said "man is the measure", knowledge is relative to human beings and limited to their "viewpoints". So because we each have our own viewpoints it's difficult to find a right answer to the basic questions and truths about human life.
What did the Aztecs of Mexico call their school of philosophers?
Would you agree with African, North American and South Pacific tribes that we are nature?

  2. I don't believe that there is an answer to all basic questions in life because even the most basic questions can have answers that human mind cannot comprehend. Most people can't accept not knowing the answers so they make up their own to make themselves feel better. This is where religion comes from.

    What is animism?

Why do you think American Indian tribes felt such a strong bond to nature and their ancestors?

  3. I do not feel there is basic answer to all questions in life. If someone asked why is the sky blue, what could be a basic answer to that? To me, the answer would be one full of detail. I also feel, some questions in life might not have specific answer, or even have an answer at all. Is there a basic answer to why Christians choose call their god, God or why the Islamic religion choose to call him Allah? Well maybe those aren't basic questions. A better saying to me is, for every basic question there may be a basic answer.

Factual Question: What is one the reasons the Aztecs lost to the Spanish invaders?

Discussion Question: Do you feel sacrificing another human being is justifiable?

  4. I do not think that there are answers to ALL basic questions but that many can be. But, like religion, there are many interpretations to what is true and what is not. Everyone is entitled to believe what they want.

Why did the North American Indians believe that killing other creatures was "not right?"

Do you think that this belief( the indians not believing in killing other creatures) could be the root of vegetarianism?

  5. I agree that the basic questions in life have no definite answer, because no one person knows the exact right answer. Who is to say that there is only one right answer anyway?

Factual Question: Why do we only have fragments of teachings left from the school of philosophers?
A: The Spanish burned most of their books when they conquered.

Discussion Question: Do you think that if the Spanish had never conquered the Aztecs and burned their school and books that the Aztecs would still be a great civilization?

  7. I believe the most we could ever have is the theory to an answer to all basic questions in life. There's too many things that, no matter how definite of an answer we think we might have, we'll never truly know the answer to in our physical life. I think people just like believing they know the answer to something to satisfy a human need of order in life.

(Factual) - What did the Mayans, Incas, and Aztecs believe the continued existence of the universe relied upon?

(Discussion) - Do you agree in any way with the concept of animism?

  8. I believe their is not an answer to every question. they're many things that can not be explained or defined. Some things in life will never be answered.

Factual: what is the existence of the universe that relied on us?

Discussion: Do you think it is fair to take another live for any cause?
