Skeptic (11/5)

Katie, Brooke, Robb, Dave, Shawn, Jamie

 Group 5 discussed the following:

What is Skepticism?
philosophical skepticism is an overall approach that requires all information to be well supported by evidence.[4] Skeptics may even doubt the reliability of their own senses
In philosophical skepticism, pyrrhonism is a position that refrains from making truth claims. A philosophical skeptic does not claim that truth is impossible (which would be a truth claim). The label is commonly used to describe other philosophies which appear similar to philosophical skepticism, such as academic skepticism, an ancient variant of Platonism that claimed knowledge of truth was impossible. Empiricism is a closely related, but not identical, position to philosophical skepticism. Empiricists see empiricism as a pragmatic compromise between philosophical skepticism and nomothetic science; philosophical skepticism is in turn sometimes referred to as "radical empiricism."

Why is Skepticism such a huge part of our society (then and now)??

In life we all have fallen short by being skeptics at one point or another.  In fact isn't it inhumane to not be that way... THINK ABOUT IT!!!
Life deals you a bad hand and what do we do complain about how horrible life is and how we wish we would die... but all that damn complaining doesn't change a damn thing..
We struggle trying to maintain sanity throughout doubt but isn't it inevitable?
SKEPTICISM IS DOUBT!!!
Your reality could be as black and white as a zebra but a skeptic will see and find grey somewhere.

Hecht says this:  What is more, all the philosophers systems were vulnerable to argument.  Pyrrho believed the opposite of every statement could be asserted with plausibility.  Also, our senses and minds provide false or merely narrow information.  WE SHOULD TO ATTEMPT TO HAVE NO OPINIONS.

DAVE GAVE THIS GREAT ANALOGY:
analogy--------->  lil kids playing a game without putting a quarter in the game...
the game is doing what it wants to do but the kids is given the perception that they're playing the game.

HIND SITE IS 20/20 but reality is what you feel is real...

I think that skepticism is good for the world. I gives us new perspectives on problems and new ways to look at the world. The search for truth is the main reason we even have philosophers in the first place. We all want to know what is out there, and to understand it. Its part of the human condition. Without the search for knowledge and understanding we truly would be like Plato's man, in a cave thinking of shadows as reality. I prefer to live like Aristotle's version of man, experiencing the world for what it is and always pushing the boundaries of my own understanding.

!.)What classical philosopher asserted that "we can not know anything for certain so we should neither affirm nor deny anything"?

    1. R, it is very true that the search for truth is important, but once we discover what we feel is truth, we must act on it or the search was an act of futility.

I agree but we must also be open to the fact that we could be wrong. As children we believe things that we would consider to be folly now. Does that mean that we stick to the ideologies that we held when we were younger? No. We stay open to new information and constantly shape our minds and truths.

Skepticism itself is not a good or bad thing in itself. What we do with our scepticism makes it good or bad. It should be our desire to grow as people. If we take our scepticism and act upon it- research our doubts and make our own belief systems- then be skeptical is good. If we simply wallow in our skepticism, then it will hold us back from becoming a better person. At some point, we as humans have to make a decision about a subject and then act on that decision. Otherwise, we run the risk of accomplishing nothing with our lives. Remember that a "no-decision" is actually a decision in itself.

    Questions for next session:

    1. (FACTUAL) Who did Zarathustra devote himself to worshiping? (Answer: AHURA MAZDA)

    2. (DISCUSSION) Based on the story of Job, why should a just man suffer?

  4. Skepticism is the questioning of knowledge, facts, opinions, and beliefs. Skeptics may also ten to doubt there own opinions or beliefs. I don't think being a skeptic is a bad thing. I find that it means you are open minded and willing to accept all the ideas and opinions your peers may have, thinking that they could or could not be right.

    1. Factual: Zarathustra explained suffering as teh consequence of a war between what? answer: two twin spirits.

    2. Discussion: Based on the question above, one of these spirits are good and the other is destructive. The entire world is a battle between these two, good and evil. What is your opinion on this?
