Next for #s 8, 9

Monday's just our second class, so please post your personal introductions and thoughts on philosophy (what is it, have you encountered it before in pop culture or life?, etc.) and read those of your classmates. We'll create our five discussion groups and discuss JMH's intro & quiz. Everybody try to come up with a factual question about the quiz, and a possible discussion question. Post those along with your introduction before Monday.
M 23  Introductions, “CoPhilosophy” Groups, JMH Introduction & “Scale of Doubt” Quiz
If you have difficulty posting, email it directly to me and I'll put it up for you.

And here, to make sections 9 & 11 jealous, is a picture of our shiny new classroom in the College of Education Building.

  1. Hopefully this is where I'm supposed to post this, but...

    MW 12:40-2:05 COE 250 (#8) Personal Intro

Howdy, folks. My name is Alexa Games - I'm 21, and a Graphic Design major here at good ol' MTSU. I work as a nanny for two mischievous kids, and in my spare time enjoy anything involving anything crafty/getting my hands covered in paint, or playing/watching/listening to music. I'm very excited and passionate about design and anything having to do with my major, but it feels good to exercise the other half of my brain, and I'm excited to learn more about philosophy and think deeply about life and the mysteries it contains.

My current definition or understanding of philosophy boils down to what I believe to be humanity's need to define or more deeply understand the way in which our minds, universe, and society function. I think human beings have an inexplicable desire to want to understand or dissect the reasoning behind everything in life, and to me, this is what philosophy is. I also believe that our modern day society (especially young adults), discards this desire in pursuit of more materialistic means of satisfying ourselves, which has resulted in a generation of people who lack self-awareness or the ability to empathize with others, and a distinct disinterest in finding personal truth in the world we live in. I'm by no means schooled or educated in the history of philosophy (something else I look forward to learning), but this is what I comes to mind when asked to define what I think philosophy is.

Recently, I watched a documentary entitled "The Philosopher Kings", which was very eye opening (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1219832/). I recommend checking it out - it's a very uplifting (and it's on Netflix!). I also have been reading "The Book" by Alan Watts over the past year or so, opening it and reading when I feel led to do so, and after each time I've read part of it, I feel more open to the ideas and opinions of others, and it's made me examine my own life more throughly.

Anyway, I look forward to getting to know all of my fellow classmates, and hope to learn and gain more insight from your beliefs and opinions, while trying to define my own version of what I believe to be true of this world.

  2. Personal Intro: Hartley Imes (Section 8)

Hey I'm Hartley Imes, I'm a freshman at MTSU. I've lived in and around Atlanta, GA all of my life and decided to go out of state so I'm here majoring in Recording Industry focusing on Audio Production and minoring in Music Industry. I grew up in music because my entirely family has been involved in music some time or another and I've pretty much never seen a moment in life without music. I spend my time playing acoustic guitar and writing music although I am trying to learn many different instruments. I've already learned mandolin and ukulele, but there are plenty of others left. Besides playing music my other passions have been making coffee. So naturally I have worked at Starbucks before which is the best job ever!

I believe that philosophy is an individual's perspective on life and how they deal with it. I haven't really encountered any media dealing with philosophy that has impacted me so I don't remember anything specific but I have grown up believing that music, anything to do with it, tends to be one of the most important impacts on life so my personal philosophy is that music is an important part of life.

  4. I am Jacob Johnson, and I am currently a sophomore. I am majoring in construction management, and I am focusing on residential building and land development. I love hunting and fishing and pretty much anything outdoors. I have been raised in a southern baptist church, and I still believe in God and that he is the only answer to save us from our sins. I decided to take philosophy because I think it is interest to see how others think and perceive ideas. I think philosophy is sort of looking for a reason as to why or how something is or isn't when the answer is not clearly defined.

  5. Hello, my name is Devin Dixon. I am a freshmen, and have really enjoyed school so far! I'm originally from a small town in Indiana, but moved here about four and a half years ago. I went to Riverdale too. As of now, I am undeclared, but I fully intend to declare as a Psychology major with a minor in Religious Studies. Which brings me to my own personal philosophy; I find religion and "faith-based" beliefs to reveal more in a person and their philosophical view points, rather than strict "logic" issues.

I've grown up in church all my life, and yes, that gave me the obvious inclination to believe Christian beliefs, but I feel like it is of utmost importance to know why you believe what you do, and to be able to give a reason why you think the way you do and know what you say you know. As you can see by my previous sentence, I am a profound advocate of run-on sentences as well... But nevertheless, I love to give my view point on things (even if I haven't figured out a definite answer on it yet), and discussion about differing view points is a personal fascination of mine.

I'd have to say that the Bible is probably the coolest source for philosophical growth, and it has a lot to offer whether you believe its whole message or not. However, it is by no means the only source of truth that's out there; movies, books, and even video games can easily spur thoughts into motion for philosophical thinking. I think we all have a lot to offer each other, and I am very excited for this class!

  6. Hey you guys, My name is Kaleb Mckissick, and i am in the Philosophy section 08 class. Im a freshman at MTSU, and I dont have a major at this moment I use to be a Music Ed major but I hated it so I decided to pursue the Pre-Occupational Therapy program here which isnt a degree technically. I enjoy Music,I love hanging with my friends,I like watching tv,and I like being lazy sometimes. I really dont know what else to say. Well I was born, and raised in Springfield, TN. I love my hometown it's the best place to be. I love my family, and my friends. I love going to church, it makes me happy. I was raised Penecostal, Apostolic, and I am a firm believer in my faith. I also think that this will be an amazing class, and I look forward to the different discussions that we will have in this class. Oh and those two questions I have to answer. 1)I really feel that Philosophy is the study of doubt. I feel like it causes you to try to doubt, and question everything that you have formed a opinion on in your life especially Religion. and then 2) I heard about this new movie coming out called The Hunger Games about a post-end of time series about teens having to fight to the death to gain food, honor, and stability for their families, and homes. I feel that this is Philosophical on so many differnt levels from the innocence of children being taken away, that our society would do anything to sustain stability, that our government has way too much power, and is already a major threat. I also feel like its some way to throw out how easy it is to be a killer a crime that we now days consider hayness. Well Im going to bring this to an end before I waste any more brainless thoughts. Peace

  7. Hi, my name is Will Colston. I realize that I am a little late posting my introduction, but here it is anyway. I was born in Chattanooga and moved to middle Tennessee when I was in 3rd grade. I went to Oakland High School and came straight to MTSU. I work full time and keep a rather tight schedule, not counting life's little hiccups that tend to find me. I have a general idea of what philosophy is, but am looking forward to becoming more thoroughly acquainted with the topics, ideas, and major questions throughout the semester and can't wait to stretch my brain a little.
