Discussion:
T'was an excellent group discussion that began with each of us retaking the Doubt quiz in order to find out what questions we had problems answering. The group as a whole found the quiz to be fairly accurate. The conclusions the quiz led each of us to weren't far off from our predispositions in life already. We even came to find that the group has a nice ratio of atheists, agnostics, and theists. All very open minded to the wonders of Philosophy.

Open Question: Do you believe the quiz's intentions are to predict your spiritual predisposition, or do you believe it's just a purposeful manner of putting the reader in a state of doubt in order to get the "critical thinking" center of our brains going prior to delving into the contents of the book?
Factual Question: How many questions did you have to answer for the quiz?

  1. Nadar, very good job at describing both what we as a group took from the test within the text as well as the text itself as a whole thus far, as well as painting a fairly accurate yet quick synopsis of our group as a whole, as a collective. Looking forward to many more discussions with this very interesting and diverse group.

  2. As for the open question, I believe (again as I pointed out in class, believe not know) the purpose is to get one to be inwardly reflective and step out of one's self in order to take a full inventory and potentially open some doors (or even windows if necessary) in order that we may let out our preconceptions of ourselves and the world around us in order to better try to understand the universe around us and our interactions with it and fundamentally, why we do what we do through the course of our lives.

  3. This articulate summary definitely captures the content of our group's discussion. I really like the dynamic of our group and I think that we will continue to have poignant conversations.

I feel that the quiz represents both a vessel for re-examination and a tool for measuring one's own convictions. The conclusions I came to after taking the quiz really only reinforced my convictions, but others in our group had different results.

  4. Nice job Nader!! Our discussion started with the realization that we had not quite done the doubt quiz, but we passed the books around and came to our conclusions of our believes based on the quiz. I feel we are quite diverse and definitely a philisophical group so far. Im looking forward to this experience.

Open Question: What past experiences may have directed your current believes, and how different would the experiences have to be that could potentially change these same believes?

Factual Question: How many discussion groups were we split up into at the end of class?

  5. I really like our group! I feel like, even with our differing beliefs, we all are prepared to discuss stuff that will challenge us personally. I'm very excited about my own personal opportunity to better define and articulate what I believe, and I think we're all pretty much on that same page, even though we may completely disagree with those beliefs.

Open: What would you say is the purpose of religion?

Factual: What philosophical issue does cosmology deal with?
