Personal Introduction: Frank Harrison (section 9)

Hello all. My name is Frank Harrison, and I am a first year Computer Information Systems major from Evansville, In. I have always been highly interested in computers and new technologies, making my focus of study an easy decision. I pretty much jumped straight into my career from high school, thinking college was more or less unnecessary, but as time passed, I became increasingly bored with slacking off. So here I am; ready to dust off my brain and put it to good use again.

Although not religious myself, I have always invited a good debate on the nature of the universe with my friends. I have tried to expand my viewpoint through a variety of movies and some books, but it can become difficult to separate an informed opinion from an agenda driven rant. I'm hoping this class will enhance my perspective to better understand the world around me.

As for pop culture references, there is one movie that stands out above all others to me. Waking Life is a film consisting of many philosophers, authors, actors, etc. expressing their ideas about the nature of consciousness. I realize this sounds pretty dull, but the director (Richard Linklater, who made such films as Dazed and Confused and A Scanner Darkly) presents it in a highly artistic style that is truly captivating. If the topics of lucid dreaming or collective unconscious interest you, this is a must see.

  1. I too have that problem when it comes to gaining insight from friends. Hopefully you can get through college successfully.
