Philosophers Guild(H)
Great discussion last class. We decided to stay behind and in lieu of walking had a riveting discussion with Dr. Oliver. If anyone has seen my philosophy notebook please let me know, i believe i may have left it in the room last class as well. On last class and the idea of truth what do you believe defines "truth." Curious to hear everyone's thoughts.

Hey everyone, my group the Highlanders hasn't posted a post yet so I will just comment on yours. I'd post one myself but I'm not an author and I don't know how.
ReplyDeleteFactual Question: What was Simone de Beauvoir's famous book called? The Second Sex.
Discussion Question: Do you feel like life is inherently pointless? It seems a bit down doesn't it? Each individual brings meaning to their own lives but is there a collective point to all of humanity?
My group hasn't posted, but we talked a lot about cults and how they work. I couldn't ever imagine joining a cult, but I have never been in such dispair that I would be willing to listen to a lot of "Crazy talk." Its a whole different world that I am unfamiliar with.

I think I might have seen someone post this before but it is always interesting.
I actually posted on our old post, since I couldn't find one, but it was along similar lines. I really do think it's fascinating and disturbing that people are capable of having such a mindset as the people in these cults. I know in our discussion we talked a little bit about what sort of circumstances could lead a person to such a dismal situation, but it's still difficult to imagine myself in those terms. I suppose it's one of those things that you can never really understand until you're put in that position (and if that's the case, then I have to admit I'm quite content in my ignorance!)
DeleteDid Simon de Beauvior consider herself a philosopher? ( not really; she instead thought of herself as a feminist theorist and feminist existentialist.
ReplyDeleteDiscussion: It seems to me that the direction and choices we make in our own life define who and what we are. It is hard for me to put faith in something outside my realm of everyday life. Would agree? Is my opinion a form of existentialism?
Comments: Good discussion last time guys! Keep it up!

I shall comment on another page...
Would have loved to have been a part of your discussion on truth! It's always so fascinating to hear the debates between absolute/nonabsolute truth.
ReplyDeleteSounds like your group had a great discussion.
ReplyDeleteFactual question: who was one of the founding fathers of existentialism? (Sartre)
ReplyDeleteDiscussion question: do you believe that human beings existence precedes essence?
Comment: I enjoy our discussions. I'm going to hate not having philosophy next semester.
