Jesus Group 1 (16)

Our group discussed Jesus, the beliefs of Judaism before his arrival, and how He changed religion and philosophy forever.

What was the first collective and written book for Jewish religion?
A. The Torah
B. The Mishnah
C. The Bible
D. The Koran

Jennifer Hecht says that Jesus was a doubter. Do you agree He was, and why?

One of Hecht's examples was Matthew 27:46. I don't believe Jesus's was doubting God. Though Jesus was fully God, He was also fully man. He was sent to take the punishment for the world's sin. In this final moment on the cross, He was bearing all sin. Being filled with all the sin, and also being part man, it would only make sense for Him to feel despair. However, He knew from the beginning that this was what his end was to look like. He could have denied being God's son at any moment, and save His life. He did not though. He understood what He was doing, and why.

  1. The two instances of Jesus's doubt that Hecht mentions are not hidden in the scripture. They are familiar to any Christian or scholar of the text and maybe be interpreted or emphasized differently according to the individual. It is important to note that Hecht doesn't claim Jesus doubted the existence of God, rather that he doubted his own ability to be sacrificed and seemed frustrated by waiting for God while on the cross. Viewing Jesus as a human, or a version of God, these two extreme instances hardly seem sufficient evidence to classify him as a doubter. Surely, anyone would feel uncertain under the circumstances in which his doubts appear. From the account of his life given in the Bible, his general outlook hardly seems doubtful.

  2. I don't think jesus was doubting god. He followed him willingly and obviously knew his end before his start. Even when I know something must be done, though I don't want to, I know its right and must be done I curse it and complain all the way. Although I still do it. Sometimes you have to do things you don't like to get the effect you do like. Idk just my thoughts. Jesus had much time to find a way out if he wished it
