Nicholas of Autrecourt (16) Group 5

Discussion Question:

Do you believe that we cannot truly no anything?
-Can you be skeptical about all claims that knowledge makes?

Is there any true knowledge?

The pope ordered Nicholas of Autrecourt's ________
a. Death, by hanging
b. Books to be burned
c. deportation
d. renewel of Christian vowels

B

Copernicus

Going off of Platos equation as the sun being the ultimate good, Copernicus concluded the that the sun was a more logical center of our solar system. Contrary to popular belief and many religious belief that the Earth was in fact the center.

Discussion question: Do you believe heliocentric theory shows evidence for a prime mover or a god?
-Is our solar system appear to be intelligently designed? Or is it seem more spontenous, more in favor of other theories (big bang theory, ect.)

Do you believe their are other life forms out there in the universe?

  1. I researched a little more into Nicholas and his philosophies, and the New World Encyclopedia asserts that he did not believe that all truth is unknowable. Instead he felt that "any genuine certitude must be based on the principle of non-contradiction; nothing could be considered absolutely true if its contradiction could be true at the same time".

I think this idea has significant implications. I believe there is such a thing as true knowledge, but I also think it is important to consider alternatives to the "truth". If you could contradict a fact even a little bit, then it is possible for an alternative to that fact to exist. It's a mindbending concept, but I believe it is plausible. I think it's important to be skeptical about all truth, and to seek out truth for yourself using your own senses, intuition, and previous experience.

  2. Post for Zachary Taylor - He's having trouble commenting so he emailed this to me to post for him.

I do believe that true knowledge exists because something doesn’t have to be right answer or what happened for it to be knowledge. If I were to tell you that elephants are purple you would know that it was a lie but you would know that I once told you a lie about elephants being purple and is that knowledge. If someone ask several people what they thought about me you would probably get several different responses such as oh that Zach dude he is an asshole, from one person but you might hear oh yeah I know him he’s a great guy, from another. These descriptions would seem to contradict each other but they are both knowledge.

Factual Question: What model of the solar system did Copernicus propose?
    A. Geocentric
    B. Heliocentric
    C. Copernicancentric
    D. Theocentric

  3. I do believe that we can have true knowledge of things. Of course, I think that we should look into things and draw conclusions from what we've found, but to say that we cannot know anything is absurd to me. I also understand that certain things have different "truths" or opinions, but that is still knowledge.

    Discussion:
Why do you think Copernicus tried to deny his beliefs on his deathbed?
