Philosphazers! Section 16 Group 1

Discussion question: Why do societies that adopt a relatively new religious philosophy inevitably move toward being far more intolerant of other religions as their's becomes more popular?

Religions tend to benefit the bourgeoisie class, so it is often their duty to indoctrinate the youth into taking immense pride in their religion. This results in the closing off and intolerance towards other religions and belief systems.

  1. Maybe it's in the nature of the individuals involved. Of course, as new religion should initially be open and inviting to win support. After enough followers are involved, though, they have to be less tolerant. After all, what's the point of believing something if you let others follow their own differing (wrong!) beliefs peacefully?

In regard to next class, Maimonides:

Factual - Was Maimonides Christian, Jewish, or Muslim? (Jewish)
Discussion - Do we make and follow laws as an organization/control system for our own human needs, or to please some higher power?

  2. Maimonides

Factual: What movement took off from the philosophies of Maimonides?

Discussion: When presented with philosophical truths that contradict our religious beliefs, do we have a duty to attempt to reconcile with them?
