Group 1 Section 16 Philosophazers (Augustine)

Our section was on Augustine, our factual question is:

Which philosophies did Augustine not explore?
A)Epicurean
B)Christianity
C)Pastafarianinsm
D)Manichaean

And our discussion question is something along the lines of:

Based on the presented material, what then IS doubt??

I really can't tell, JMH switches between different views of doubt, in this week's passage I wouldn't consider what she presented as Augustine's doubt as doubt; he was struggling in my opinion, and the evidence she presented for Jesus's doubt was very little to make a definitive case toward his doubt, or what that doubt was...

NOTE: I couldn't think of a better existent (or non existent) philosophy that Augustine has not explored
NOTE: Pastafarianism is not a recognized philosophy by many people, but in Australia it is.

  1. I agree that Augustine seemed to be more in a struggle with his inner conflict than in doubt. He was struggling with the lust he enjoyed, and the beliefs he felt.

We also brought up the notion of Augustine possibly being slightly schizophrenic. Most people wouldn't just fully commit to a religion just from one Holy verse that they read because little girls were singing. Maybe he was just passionate, but I wouldn't be surprised if he had been mentally off.

  2. It seems, from the reading, that doubt was the furthest thing from Augustine's mind. He chose, rather, to listen to his mommy and think what she thought. Like Rachel said, his struggle seemed to be focused on his own desires rather than his doubt.

  3. I agree. Questioning and doubt seem like two different things to me.
