A. Al-Razi
B. Al-Rawandi
C. Al-Warraq

Answer C

What is your opinion on Al-Warraq's Statement "he who orders his slaves to do things that he knows him to be incapable of doing, then punishes him, is a fool"?

Next section is on Scholastics don't forget to post your questions.

  2. I think that al-Warraq's statement is completely true. Some people may counter this statement by saying that God's reason for doing such things is not meant to be understood and that His reason is infallible. If these people found themselves in the shoes of these punished slaves, however, I can assure you they would feel a bit different about this. In the words of George Carlin, "results like these do not belong of the resume of a supreme being, this is the kind of shit you'd expect from an office temp with a bad attitude".

  3. I think that in the mind of a human, then it is seen as an act of cruelty, a kind of sadistic torture, but because the statement is in reference to God I can't say that it is completely out of character (for God). The bible tells us that he is a vengeful and jealous God, and to me based on what I have been taught(in church as well as this Philosophy class) is that maybe there is a bigger picture. Maybe it's not about if we are told to do something that we cannot achieve, but rather that he just wants to see how much effort we DO put into trying to succeed. I don't think any man has the right to question the motives of the being he acknowledges as God. I don't think hell is a punishment, I think it is an alternative. We have so much that is promised to us if we "follow in the footsteps of Jesus", and I don't think he banishes us to Hell just because we don't, I think that is a choice he has given us to choose freely for ourselves. This choice should not be made out of fear though, it should be something that we wish to achieve.

  4. I like what both of you guys are saying...It is a complicated issue, I lean more toward Earl on this one...I want to believe that Jesus/ God lets us choose our own path...
