Group 3 Section 17: Pomponazzi & Machiavelli

Factual Question: Who said that a good ruler had to lie sometimes because everybody else did it?

A. Pomponazzi
B. Machiavelli
C. Martin Luther
D.Erasmus

Answer: B

Discussion Question: Do you agree Machiavelli when he says that "[Christian principles] have made men feeble, and caused them to become and easy prey to evil-minded men, who can control them more securely, seeing that the great body of men, for the sake of gaining Paradise, are more disposed to endure injuries than to avenge them"?

  1. I'm not sure that I fully agree with his statement, because not every man who believes in God is weak-minded or just a sheep in the flock. Some people believe in God for more of a guideline on life, but not for wandering blindly through life depending on the words in a book supposedly written by God.

  2. Factual: The Paduan professor Pietro Pompanazzi believed that the human soul was_______.
    a) immortal
    b)mortal
    c)nonexistent

Discussion: According to Pompanazzi, either the three main religions are false (Christ's, Moses's, and Muhammad's), or two of them are wrong and the greater portion of mankind is deceived. What makes you're religion the right one?
