I think repression can be controlled if the individual realizes that they are doing it. Sometimes people repress emotions of some sort as a defense mechanism, which Freud also talks about in many of his works. I believe in the fact that some memories or emotions are too painful for some people to deal with therefore the repress there feelings about them at the time and often don't even realize their doing it until it is brought to their attention.
