Group 2 (17)

Factual question: what was Henry Bergsons view on reality? A. reality is change B. reality is motionless C. reality is stagnant

Discussion question: Do you agree with Freud's philosophy of the unconcious, do we all have these repressed desires? if so, are these desires controllable, are they able to be discovered and eliminated or managed?

  1. As a group we decided that everyone does repress desires. The reasoning for this is that we cant help it and that social norms dictate our applied behavior and cause some thoughts to be repressed. Personally I think Freud over exaggerated the affects of the subconscious mind on the individual.

  2. I don't know if I agree that freud over exaggerated the affects of the subconcious. I could see why anyone would make that assumption but maybe freud truly understood that some peoples subconscious is more repressed than others. And as extreme as it may be some of these cases exist.

  3. Desire can be controlled if you are made aware of these emotions. Harnessing your thoughts and feelings, although extremely difficult, is key to making rational decisions. Kelsang Gyatso, a Buddhist monk, teaches that suffering stems from the desire of earthly things. Only through recognizing and eventually ridding yourself of these desires can one hope of reaching a state of nirvana.
