US Women’s Soccer and Inequality.

We touched on this the other night but this week’s reading brought it back to mind.
I listen to a couple of  British “football” podcasts as I am a big Liverpool supporter (another identity I possess) and this was brought up there that the US women’s team been more successful than the men’s. They are considered the best team in the world and having won the WC while the men didn’t even qualify for the last one. The US Soccer Federation has projected a profit of almost $18 million primarily due to the women’s success. The 2015 Women’s World Cup final between the US and Japan is the most watched soccer match in US history. And Fox Sports is heavily promoting this year’s event. Yet the women are paid a maximum of $99,000 and the men earned an average of $263,320.

  1. And so, the 13-0 blowout must have released a lot of pent-up frustration. Can't blame 'em. But I won't be chiming in with the "USA USA USA" chant, which always feels so retrograde and primitive. And Drumpfian.

    1. I don't always root for the US teams but I'm pulling for them.
