Tennessee State Museum, Scopes Trial re-enactment field trips

Speaking of the importance of history...

Explored my adoptive Tennessee identity at the magnificent new Tennessee State Museum yesterday, with Dr. Hinz. It was captivating. (images)

We spent an hour and a half there and barely scratched the surface of fascinating exhibits. Woulda stayed longer but the Sounds' Throwback Thursday game next door beckoned. This could be the field trip our class is looking for!

Thursday July 11 would be a good weekday to visit the Museum, in lieu of our scheduled class on the 10th - it's open 'til 8 on Thursdays, closes at 5 other days.

And, I may still go back to Dayton again in July too, for the Scopes festival/re-enactment. Recommended preparation to enhance the experience: watch Inherit the Wind, and read Trials of the Monkey and Summer for the Gods.

Saturday July 20 would be a good day for Dayton, with a 1 pm showtime-it's a 2 hour drive from Murfreesboro, but in the eastern time zone... so, we'd need to leave the 'boro at about 9 a.m. our time. After the show, we should plan to talk about it at the Monkey Town Brewing Company (I recommend the fish & chips and the Evolution IPA.)

If we decide as a class to do either of these excursions in place of a regular class meeting, we'll still have our regularly-scheduled assignments, readings, quizzes, etc.

Or, we may treat these as voluntary extra-curricular events and still meet in class every Wednesday. Let me know if any of you are interested in coming along for either or both. We'll talk about it.

  1. I could be talked in to a trip to Dayton or the museum. A friend of mine is in charge of design at the state museum.

  3. It's the perfect complement to the historical obelisks out on the mall. One could easily spend an entire afternoon there, with perhaps a break to visit the Picnic Tap in the Farmers Market followed by a ballgame at 1st TN Park next door. That would be a good day!
