Pets, Pests And Food: Our Complex, Contradictory Attitudes Toward Animals
Another Hidden Brain episode raises identity questions. Who do we (especially we Americans) think we are, when we treat pets as family members and pretend they're just like us? (This was fun listening, on my Saturday bikeride.)

Eating Animals by J.S. Foer covers this topic well. I am a vegetarian (who try’s to eat vegan but her best friend works at Ivey’s Cakes and I am weak, and I love to eat cheese when traveling, and not worry about the bit of butter on my naan. I learned only to cook well vegan style... and my husband isn’t starving....and he decided on his own to stoop eating eggs).
ReplyDeleteSo this topic is one I’ve looked at again and again. Personally, I saw the cows in my backyard as ‘pets’ not meat. And when I finally understood, I was really uncomfortable. It is a hard subject and personal.... a bit of my identity now since I choose eat a certain way.
